Proraso Shave Cream SMACKDOWN!

A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed  the Proraso Sandalwood and Shea Butter shaving crème that I'd purchased from BadHairBoy. You will remember that I glowed with enthusiasm for the product.

So, being a consumer of taste and sophistication, I thought I would try out the long established Proraso product, "Proraso Eucalyptus Shaving Cream" which (according to the Proraso website, and I quote) "has serviced a close comfortable shave for generations, owes its fame to the formula rich with eucalyptus oil". Hey, I like the smell of eucalyptus, I have  admiration for another Proraso product and- yahoo!- BadHairBoy was having a sale. So, I plunged in and purchased the crème.

I enjoy buying from BadHairBoy and there is always a bit of excitement when his parcel arrives (you know the parcel was from them because it has the company logo stamped on the outside). Now, I had ordered other goodies from them but I was most keen to try out the Proraso crème.

My Dollar Shave Club (Australia) blade was still pretty new so I didn't feel compelled to change over to a fresh blade to try the shaving crème. I applied the crème as I would normally and was surprised by the lack of identifiable scent. It went on as nicely as the Sandalwood and Shea Butter product and certainly felt pleasant on my face. Unfortunately, the shave was rather average. It did an alright job but lacked finesse and comfort.

After shaving, I went out to see Mrs TMB and got her opinion. Her first reaction was that the scent was very strong. Huh? What scent? Unlike the Sandalwood and Shea, I was unable to smell any scent from the Eucalyptus crème, but Mrs TMB could. Other than that, she thought it felt fine. I agree. It felt fine. Not good, not great. Fine.

Subsequent shaves cemented my opinion of this product but has also raised a question in my mind. I saw that Proraso also makes a different Eucalyptus and Menthol version, mainly aimed at the shaving brush user. Perhaps I expected a stronger Eucalyptus and Menthol experience? Maybe. Whatever the expectation, the green Proraso Eucalyptus Shaving Cream was a disappointment. I will revisit it another time but for the moment, the red Sandalwood and Shea Butter shaving crème remains stunning good.

Stop Press! Update!  First up, the red Proraso Sandalwood and Shea Butter shaving crème is still a winner, however over the past week, I have used no other shave crème other than the green Proraso. While I still believe it lacks the depth and subtlety of the Red crème, I have to say my impression of it has improved. There is no doubt: It is a good shave crème. It dances over some of the many of the commercially available crèmes but given the choice, I'll stick with what I said and I'd buy the Red instead.
