DollarShaveclub.com First Shave
It was with a bit of trepidation that I used the DollarShaveclub razor. The hype around the company was huge, what with Mike's viral video and the massive publicity that surrounded the company's launch. I think I watched that video five times, laughing each time. There was a natural innocence to the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, I understand that it was probably really well scripted but it had enough "dopey" and "daggy" to make it accessible, light and (let's face it) memorable.
So, the first shave had quite a reputation to live up to. I won't drag this out to the nth degree. It was an incredibly comfortable and effective shave. The blade ran smoothly across my face, without any pulling, tugging or scratching. The blade scoffed at my fussy and easily nicked neck area as the razor shaved effortless around the throat.
I was surprised. I expected a couple of days of "orientation". You know, getting used to how the blade functioned, the razor getting used to me. That kind of thing. While there was a small learning curve of getting used to the angle of the handle and blade, this was achieved within seconds.
What did take longer to get the hang-of was the trimming blade. I turned the unit around to shave my pesky 'under nose' spot. The trim blade did not feel as sharp as the other blades as it snipped the short whiskers on this difficult area. (Spoilers: over the next couple of days, I needed to pay closer attention to totally get rid of a couple of the under-nose whiskers). That said, it was simply amazing using the trim blade to clean up my sideburns.
I remember when I finished that first shave thinking "This is fantastic" and wondering if I should just stop doing my reviewing because it is so good. However, you never know what is next! And, this was just the first shave. How will it hold up after a week?
Which begs the question. How often should I change my blade? How often do you change your blade? I'd be interested to hear how often you change your blade- post a reply below.
